Alan Watts on the Purposeless Life
2009 December 14
A friend in Australia created this video based on a talk given to students some 40 years ago by Alan Watts. In our culture with its “purpose driven life” teachers and leaders, it has something very real and direct to tell us today. Yet I offer it with no political point in mind; I do not even ask that viewers understand the idea of “the purposeless life.” It is probably better that you not understand, better that instead of “standing under” these ideas, as you would stand under a flag, a leader, a guru, or a God, you “besidestand” them. The wise, after all, never seek followers or adherents or patriots; only companions in the great way.
