Weekend Reading Recommendations

Topping today’s must-reads, for pure artfulness in a small space, is Christopher Buckley’s eulogette for Joseph Heller, on the 10th anniversary of the Catch-22 author’s death. It’s as fine, funny, and crisp a piece of writing as you’ll ever encounter in the MSM these days.

Next is Johann Hari’s warning to members of the human species who wish to see some recognition of reality coming out of Copenhagen: “On the most important issue in the world – the stability of our biosphere – we are being scammed.”

Next comes Bill Moyers’ piece at HuffPo, which I found after wading through the knee-deep pile of Tiger garbage (this is one often unnoticed service we provide for you here).

Finally, something to add a little glow to your weekend, especially if you’re of the 50-and-over segment of the outdoor plumbing society. We still live in a youth-obsessed culture that refuses to ignore the manifest reality that our population is, well, aging. Fortunately, ordinary folks know better than the country club marketing puppies of CNN and the Huffington Post. Note, for example, that this calendar featuring nude photographs of “mature” women sold out in no time at all. Yes, Grandpa can still get it up, but not necessarily for Tiger’s mistresses or the latest Vanity Fair celebro-stripper.
